What is IPO?
IPO stands for Initial Public Offering, which is the process through which a private company goes public by offering shares of its stock to the public for the first time. The company typically hires an investment bank or group of banks to underwrite the offering and help set the initial price of the shares:
The process of going public in India is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), which oversees the registration process, reviews the company's financial statements and business plan, and approves the prospectus
In India, companies planning to go public are required to file a draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) with the SEBI, which provides detailed information about the company's financials, management, operations, and risk factors. The DRHP is reviewed by the SEBL which can suggest changes and seek clarifications before the company can file a final prospectus.
Once the SEBI approves the final prospectus, the company can launch its IPO and offer its shares to the public. The shares are typically priced through a book-building process, in which the company and its underwriters solicit bids from investors and set the price based on demand.
